Installing Aluminum Wheels on your Grinder

A quick guide to installing your Nexus aluminum grinder wheels. The drive wheels have a 5/8″ inside-diameter bore with a keyway and a 1/8″ set screw.

Installing the drive wheel

How to fit a Nexus aluminum drive wheel to your motor or pulley shaft without damaging the motor or bearings.

Test-fit without the key

Slide the dished drive wheel onto the shaft without the steel key to confirm it slides on easily. The flat side of the wheel faces the motor; the dished side faces away from the grinder.

Ease a tight fit

If the wheel doesn’t slide on, spin the shaft slowly and apply 300 or 400 grit emery cloth to the shaft for only a few seconds at a time. Stop the wheel, wipe off the grit, and try again. The wheels are CNC-machined and highly accurate — over the years we have found not all motor shafts are.

Align the keyway

When fitting the wheel to the shaft, make sure the keyway lines up properly between the wheel and the shaft.

Dress the key to size

If the key stock is too large — and it usually is — remove it and grind or file it down so the wheel slides on easily over the key.

Never hammer it on

Never hammer the drive wheel onto the shaft, as this can damage the motor and bearings. The wheel should slide on easily by hand.

Tighten the set screw

Use a 1/8 inch hex or Allen key to tighten the set screw against the motor shaft.

If you ever encounter a drive wheel you can’t remove by hand, a gear puller will remove it without damaging your motor or bearings.

Installing the 2″ idler and 3″ tracking wheels

  1. Tighten the axle bolts by hand into the D-Plate or tracking-wheel mechanism.
  2. Use ¾″ wrenches to lock the jam nut in place.
  3. Idler wheels: tighten the axle bolt only until the wheel has no side-to-side movement. The washer (machine bushing) should contact the inner race of the bearing while the wheel still spins freely by hand. If it doesn’t spin freely, back off the jam nut and bolt, then re-tighten and re-check.
  4. Tracking wheel: the jam nut should be snug so there is no side-to-side movement on the axle bolt. Tighten the bolt by hand, then tighten the jam nut against the swivel. The wheel should still spin freely by hand — if not, back off, re-adjust, and re-tighten until it does.

The bearings are sealed and do not require lubrication.
